I assume you refer to European artwork. Mayans have depicted cocoa pods much earlier. I just returned from Copan in Honduras and there cocoa beans were depicted in images and as pottery as early as the sixth century.

Thanks Michael for your comment. It’s interesting to know that Mayans were depicting cocoa pods as early as the sixth century. I bet seeing those artifacts first-hand must have been a thrilling experience. If you have any pictures, please share.
